There are three mysteries concerning George William Hunt.

1. Possible 3rd Marriage:
George W. Hunt may have married (3) Martha ‘Nettie’ NN. George William Hunt possibly separated-divorced Agnes 1870-1871, and married Martha, mother of Hector. Further, he died on 2 Oct 1871 in Arkansas and is buried either there or in Detroit. Martha and her son Hector later moved into the same household in Detroit and took care of Charles F. and David. Evidence suggests something like this. At the time of publication, no divorce record has been located for George W. Hunt and Agnes; no marriage record has been located for George W. Hunt and Martha “Nettie’ NN.

2. Death & burial:
The death of George William Hunt on 2 Oct 1871 is a mystery. Two records exists on file in the Clerk’s Office, Wayne County, Michigan. One is a ‘Death Record’ and the other is a ‘Death Record Return’. The death record return states that George died in Alina, Arkansas and the information came from his wife, Agnes J. Hunt. The fact that no burial record of George has been found in Wayne County, Michigan supports the possibility that George died and is buried in Alina, Arkansas.

3. The details of family arrangements for the period from 1871 thru 1880:
In an interview with Willard Hunt by Robert Yagley (1978, Royal Oak, Michigan), Willard Hunt, son of David Hunt, stated that David had a half-brother named Hector. Willard Hunt could not recall the details of his grandfather’s (George W. Hunt) marriage and/or death, but clearly stated that David had a half-brother named Hector. This same family history indicates that David was taken care of by his older brother Charles. Charles F. Hunt and David Hunt are found living within a family with a Hector Hunt in the south side of Springwell, Wayne County, Michigan (1880). The 1880 census records are very unusual: there are two census entries for Charles F. and David and Hector; the census record states that Hector and family were born in Alabama; and David Hunt is listed in one entry as born in Arkansas (an error) but further adds to the George William Hunt death in Arkansas mystery.

At the time of his death in 1873, Lewis Hunt resided at the Home of Friendless, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Lewis Hunt was taken in the Home of the Friendless, a charity organization that often provided low rates for single woman in need of temporary home and also took care of children whose mothers either worked or were unable to care of their children.

Children Charles F. Hunt and Sarah Ann Hunt are found at the home of their uncle, Charles F. Hunt (brother of George W. Hunt) in the Town of Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York (1875 NY Census). Probably a visit as opposed to living there.

Henry Jacob Hunt died in a horrible suicide on 29 Nov 1881; he was despondent over the death of his mother (10 days earlier) and the sickness of his wife. His biological mother was Sarah Ann Lyons who died in 1867; the mother who died 10 days prior to Henry was Martha ‘Nettie’ Hunt, Hector’s mother.

Sarah A. Hunt, died of confinement. She is buried at Brady Hill Municipal Cemetery, Saginaw, Michigan. Lot 1281, gravemarker? There was a fire which destroyed many of the cemetery records.

Agnes had a son before she married. He filed a petition in probate court after Agnes died. His name is William Howard and resides in Utica, NY. The maiden name of Agnes is Howie, so Howard must be a variant of Howie.

The final order for he probate was dated 1904. William Howard is listed as residing in Dearborn, Michigan.
