Howard W. Holthoefer was born 21 FEB 1894, in Chicago; died May 3, at age 73. Howard graduated from high school in Chicago. He loved to work on cars and became a mechanic. He married at age 17 to Myrtle Houston at Crown Point Illinois. But when he went home, his father had them married by their parish priest (under the Catholic laws) before he let them come in. They had one child, a girl, Winifred (born 1913). He then joined the army Aug. 1918 (WW I). They made a trip west, he fell in love with it and wanted to move, she did not; they divorced. Winifred said that she was 16 at the time.
He moved to Douglas, Arizona where he shortened his name to HOLT because of the difficulty people had with it. Here he met his second wife Leora Brown, married 1 DEC 1930; divorced 1949. He never told her that he had been married before or had another child.
