Arthur Michael Karey attended Sacred Heart Seminary high school in Detroit and St. Mary’s Seminary in Ohio and was ordained in 1943. He attended North American College (Rome) and received a cannon law degree in 1957. He was an aide to Detroit’s Cardinal Mooney and was with him in Rome in 1958 when the cardinal died just before cardinals were to elect a successor to Pope Pius XII.
Msgr. Karey served as pastor at St. Joseph (Lake Orion and Christ the King (Detroit).
From about 1980 until 1992, Msgr. Karey served as pastor of St. Aloysius Church, Detroit. During most of these years, he was involved with the Detroit Police department and served as the chief chaplain; roles included offering assisting to both officers and prisoners.
Msgr Karey retired in July 1992. On 6 Jan 1993, Msgr. Karey said mass at Our Lady of Victory Parish (Northville). He then went to the rectory and collapsed. He was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital (Livonia) where he died.
