Notes for Maria Steffes
In 1881, Anton and Maria (Steffes-Hermes) Reuter emigrated from Germany arriving in New York enroute to Detroit. Offspring traveling to America included John and Katharina (Hermes) Schefges (Schäfges) and 3 children, Joseph, Maria and Gertrude; Gertrude Hermes, Emma Hermes, Frank Reuter, Catherine Reuter and Margaret Reuter. Frank Hermes and Matthias Hermes choose to stay in Masburg. Maria Reuter 2 stayed in Germany to care for her grandmother Reuter, Anna Maria (Adams) Reuter, mother of Anton Reuter. When her grandmother died in 1888, Maria immigrated to Detroit, Michigan. She revisited her birthplace in 1908 (see 1908 Masburg photo).
